Rare Maugean skate seen at Cygnet

A rare and elusive Maugean skate has been spotted at the annual Cygnet Lantern Parade. The Maugean skate lives only in Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania's west coast, and is threatened with extinction, largely because of pollution from the industrial salmon farming operations in that fragile environment.

Cygnet's skate featured at the lantern parade, much to the delight of local children and many adults who came up to enquire about it.
