Most Tasmanians Have an Overwhelmingly Negative View of the Salmon Industry—CSIRO Report Confirms NOFF Stance

Main findings of the report:

• The views towards salmon aquaculture of marine scientists and government/local councils have shifted from strongly positive (in 2021) to strongly negative (in 2025).

• All stakeholder groups except the aquaculture industry, now view the industry as strongly negative.

• 60% of Tasmanians rate salmon aquaculture as 'bad' or 'very bad' for good governance and environmental sustainability.

• Salmon aquaculture ranked as the 3rd highest threat that Tasmanians are concerned about.

This report from the CSIRO confirms what NOFF has known for years; Tasmanians do not trust the salmon industry or its regulators.

"For it to be ranked as the 3rd highest concern for Tasmanians, only behind global threats like ocean warming and marine plastic pollution, is a testament to its shocking regulatory and environmental failures."

"Ocean warming directly and negatively affects salmon aquaculture, and the impacts of salmon farming on marine environments are exacerbated by ocean warming, so the compounding effects of these threats are undoubtedly playing in the minds of Tasmanians."
