Tasmania not keeping up with salmon waste problem

16/06/2023

An ABC investigation has revealed that industrial waste – including salmon waste – is not being properly managed or processed. The report shows that Tasmania is struggling to deal with its industrial waste, challenging the clean green image the state has been promoting for decades. Following waste from its source sheds light on a labyrinth of environmental, legal and government regulations, which some feel are being ignored.

The report shows a long-standing problem with waste management. The EPA has stepped in very cautiously, and too slowly. The industry itself demonstrably is not properly managing or auditing its waste disposal partners, and there is no transparency: the industry and government hide behind commercial confidentiality, and the companies directly involved, including Salmon Tasmania, declined to comment.
